The abnormal prostate
The only reason we have a prostate is for reproduction. Ironically prostate problems mostly develop when most of us don’t need the gland anymore, because we have completed our families.
Prostate problems can be divided into three groups. They are very different from each other, with little overlap. These are:
- Prostatitis. This means inflammation of the gland.
- Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH. As we get older our prostates get bigger, especially the inside part of the prostate – the transitional zone –which greatly increases in size. This is not a cancer, but has its own set of problems.
- Cancer of the prostate. Unfortunately, all too common.
